PTO VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Parents,
My name is Heather Thurgood, and I am the PTO President-elect for the next school year. You may not be aware, but it takes many volunteers to help run the PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization). We could really use more volunteers as we have a lot of open PTO Board positions. Some positions require hands-on work at the school, but some just need emails sent and can be done from work or home in the evenings.
Some of the openings include: Field Day Coordinator, Yearbook, Teacher Appreciation Week, Spirit Wear Coordinator, Fundraising, Write-A-Check Coordinator, Kindergarten Roundup, and Lead Volunteer Coordinator. If you aren't comfortable or able to lead one of these positions, you can be on the committee and help.
Please contact me if you would like to discuss filling a board position. Our PTO is an important part in the success of our schools. We need your help.
Thanks,
Heather

FIELD DAY
What is Field Day?!  It is a day spent for our learners to travel to different stations throughout the day that include bounce houses, a water slide, sponge relay races, frozen treats and MORE! One of the stations is walking to the Coppell City CORE (Coppell City’s Pool) to go swimming! The CORE will have staff on hand and also has life jackets available for swimmers. If your learner is not a strong swimmer and requires a life jacket, please reach out to your homeroom teacher and we will make sure to have that available.
What will your kiddo need to wear on Field Day, May 23rd? Please have them wear a swimsuit (girls under their clothes and boys wear swimsuit bottoms) and their grade level t-shirt and flip flops/crocs or shoes that can get wet! We will have lots of WATER activities!
What do kids need to bring to field day? Please bring a water bottle as it will probably be warm! Students will also need a towel with their initials on it! Our amazing Room Parents that will be walking our classes from station to station will keep track of the towels and lunches.
What about lunch? Please pack a sack lunch for your student! Please make sure to label your child's lunch. We will be eating picnic style outside the school. The cafeteria will offer sack lunches that day so if you would like one for your child be sure to sign them up when the signup is sent out closer to the 23rd.
Anything else we need? Learners will be outside most of the day so please apply sunscreen on your child before school and send additional if needed! We also ask that you send a dry change of clothes they can change into when they return to school. If you can pack this in a small or cinch backpack, that would be great!
Also, we have volunteer opportunities!! I wanted to personally reach out to all our parents and let you know we will need your help if you’re available! We are looking for volunteers to help run games and activities for the different groups throughout the day.
Please use the Sign-Up Genius to sign up for a time slot. As we get closer we will be reaching out with your specific station and instructions!
As a reminder, you MUST have a background check completed to volunteer for a station or walk with your class! You can complete it through the district website ASAP. If you have issues PLEASE feel free to reach out to me directly!
I am so excited for an amazing day for our learners to wrap up this year!  Thanks from your TCE Field Day Coordinators!

Miscellaneous Information From Your Teachers
*Please remember to send your child's CHARGED Ipad to school every day.  We have many Ipads coming to school that are not charged which can be frustrating for learners when they can't participate in an activity.  Thank you!!

*We have a short snack time each day. It is important that they have a healthy and nutritious snack each day to fuel their bodies. We also ask that the snack they bring is completely free of peanuts/tree nuts. This will help provide a safe environment for all learners. Also, please make sure that your child's water bottle has a "spill proof" cap.  Thank you for your help!

May 9 - 13

 Calendar Events:

May 13th - Family Day at lunch (parents only - 11:00)

May 14th - Mrs. Vincenzo's birthday

May 23rd - Field Day

May 27th - Last Day of School - Early Release

Look at what we will be learning next week:

Math -  We will work on building fluency with our fact families.

Fun math songs about telling time:

Telling time to the half hour and hour

Measurement Song

Math Activities to do with your child at home or while driving in the car

  • Go on a shape hunt.  Look for 3 dimensional shapes.  Let your child tell you how many vertices, edges and faces it a rectangular prism  or a cube has.  Which shape has more edges?  Which shape has more faces?  You will be so impressed!  I am so proud of my 1st grade mathematicians!
  • You can find geometric shapes everywhere!  Practice observation skills and help your child notice geometric shapes on a family walk or drive.  Discuss how many sides and vertices they see. Have a discussion with your child about rectangles and squares.  Ask your child, "Why is a square a special rectangle?" Discuss the attributes of 2 dimensional shapes.
  • Gather a group of coins and practice counting them together :-) We always say "When we change coins, we change the way we count."  Have fun
  • Ask your child to describe a penny, dime, nickel and quarter.  Skip count while counting a group of coins.
  • Generate story problems about family members.  For example, Mom went to the store and bought some cookies.  She ate a half a dozen cookies in the car.  Now she has 10 cookies.  How many cookies did mom have in the beginning?  :-)
  • Practice counting to 120 by ones from any given number.
  • Practice counting to 120 by tens from any given number.
  • Practice counting to 120 by fives.
  • Practice counting to 120 by twos.

Language Arts  -

Writing:    We continue to use our knowledge of writing to create a memory book for each friend in our class.  We will be working on these for the rest of the year.  Look for your child's book to come home soon!  It is so amazing to see how much these kids love each other.  The books are precious!

Reading:  We will continue to read for accuracy and fluency by using all of the strategies we have learned.  We will review compound words, reading chunks of words, and reviewing the 100 first grade words.

Grammar:  We will review parts of speech, homonyms, synonyms, and antonyms.

Social Studies  -  We will begin learning about landforms!!

Science - We will continue learning about food chains and interdependence among living organisms.

The 1st grade "TCE Chick Cam" is on!  Feel free to watch if interested.
