Math Activities to do with your child at home or while driving in the car

  • Go on a shape hunt.  Look for 3 dimensional shapes.  Let your child tell you how many vertices, edges and faces it a rectangular prism  or a cube has.  Which shape has more edges?  Which shape has more faces?  You will be so impressed!  I am so proud of my 1st grade mathematicians!
  • You can find geometric shapes everywhere!  Practice observation skills and help your child notice geometric shapes on a family walk or drive.  Discuss how many sides and vertices they see. Have a discussion with your child about rectangles and squares.  Ask your child, "Why is a square a special rectangle?" Discuss the attributes of 2 dimensional shapes.
  • Gather a group of coins and practice counting them together :-) We always say "When we change coins, we change the way we count."  Have fun
  • Ask your child to describe a penny, dime, nickel and quarter.  Skip count while counting a group of coins.

  • Generate story problems about family members.  For example, Mom went to the store and bought some cookies.  She ate a half a dozen cookies in the car.  Now she has 10 cookies.  How many cookies did mom have in the beginning?  :-)
  • Practice counting to 120 by ones from any given number.
  • Practice counting to 120 by tens from any given number.
  • Practice counting to 120 by fives.
  • Practice counting to 120 by twos.

Language Arts  -

Reading/Grammar:  We will work with vocabulary words and review synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms.  We will also continue to talk about predictions and inferences when reading a story.  Please be reviewing snap words at home.  We are on our last list of words for first grade.  If you need another copy of our words,  please email Mrs. Vincenzo.

Writing:    We will continue our look into realistic fiction writing.

Spelling  We will not learn a new spelling rule as we will be talking about contractions and how we write them.  We will not have a spelling test on Friday.

Social Studies  -  We will identify examples of choices families make when buying goods and services.

Science - We will compare ways that young animals resemble their parents.

Field Trip

*We will be going to the Dallas Zoo on April 29th.   We would love to have as many chaperones as possible. If you are planning on chaperoning, please remember that younger siblings are not able to attend the field trip.   If you have any other questions, please reach out to your teacher.  Also, remember that chaperones must provide their own transportation and that all learners will be taking the bus with the teachers.
*If you are planning to chaperone on the field trip,  please click here to fill out a mandatory background check.  A new form must be completed each year.

Miscellaneous Information From Your Teachers

*Please remember to send your child's CHARGED Ipad to school every day.  We have many Ipads coming to school that are not charged which can be frustrating for learners when they can't participate in an activity.  Thank you!!

*We have a short snack time each day. It is important that they have a healthy and nutritious snack each day to fuel their bodies. We also ask that the snack they bring is completely free of peanuts/tree nuts. This will help provide a safe environment for all learners. Also, please make sure that your child's water bottle has a "spill proof" cap.  Thank you for your help!

*TCE's counselor is Kelly Matlock.  She can be reached at kmatlock@coppellisd.com.

Click here to find Ms. Matlock's monthly newsletter.

Ms. Martin, our principal, sends out a weekly parent newsletter. Please make sure you read this every week. You can click the image above for easy access.

Volunteers
If you anticipate volunteering on campus at all this year, please click here.  A new form must be completed each year.

Birthday Treats

Birthday treats brought by students must be store bought, have its ingredients listed, and run by the nurse before given to students.  It is recommended that the treats are individually wrapped and nonperishable treats that are easy to pass out. 😊 Birthday treats will continue to be passed out at the end of the day to be eaten at home.

Pics from the week

Learning all about 3D Shapes
Play the shape game with your child.  " I am thinking of a shape that has 6 faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices? What am I thinking of?"  Cube  " I am thinking of a shape that has 0 faces, 0edges, and 0 vertices?  What am I thinking of? Sphere!

I can build 3 Dimensional Shapes and describe their attributes.

A cube has 6 faces, 8 vertices, and 12 edges

I can tell a difference between a cube and a pyramid.

This pyramid has 5 faces.  The base is a square.

This pyramid has 4 faces.  The base is a triangle.

We have begun our unit on realistic fiction writing.  We loved
sharing the introductions to our stories with our friends.
Hearing others read their stories helps give us ideas for our
own writing pieces!

Look at these little angels researching about a
topic they are interested in learning more about...
I am SO proud of them!!!!

Mind Mission Fun!!  We had to create a superhero
and then give the superhero powers to solve a real world
problem!!! They did an amazing job!!!

Brooke taught 1A how to make a lemon volcano!!
They got to vote on their volcano color!
They had so much fun!!

Clemmie taught  1C how to make Milk Art.
1C loved it!!  The art was beautiful!!!!
