Math Activities to do with your child at home or while driving in the car

Play " Guess My Number"

  • I am thinking of an even number.  It is greater than 17 and less than 19?  What number am I thinking?
  • I am thinking of a number.   It has 2 tens and 3 ones.  What number am I thinking?
  • I am thinking of number.  It has 1 ten and 15 ones.   What number am I thinking?

Practice counting to 120 by ones with your child.

Language Arts

Reading:  We will focus on our reading strategy "Chunky Monkey" to decode words by finding and reading chunks in the word that we can read.

We will also start to work with the next set of snap words for the second grading period.  If you need a new copy of the snap words, please email Mrs. Vincenzo and she will send another copy home with your child.  There are 22 words in the second group.  Snap words are words that your child should be able to read "in a snap".  If your child struggles to read, please make sure that you are reinforcing these words at home with flash cards.  Being able to read these snap words will increase their reading level since they won't have to concentrate on sounding out these easier words. It will allow their reading to be more fluent.

Writing:   We will begin our "How To" writing unit by looking at how we can break down a process into steps when writing.

Phonics/Spelling:  We will learn about the /sh/ and the /th/ digraph.  Please remember, we take a spelling pretest on Monday.  If your child misses any words on the pretest, they will study those same words for the spelling test on Friday.  If your child spells all 10 words correctly on the pretest, they will be given a more challenging list to study (List B) and they will have a spelling test on that list on Friday.

Social Studies - We will be reviewing rules, laws, and voting.

Science -  We will be learning about force and motion.
